Airbus UTM - Digital Air Traffic Management

Airbus UTM enables digital and autonomous operations to ensure a safe, fair and efficient airspace

Our team is designing, developing and deploying the digital infrastructure and services necessary to enable increasingly autonomous aircraft to safely enter and share our future skies. Through continued research, simulation, and collaboration with both regulators and industry leaders, Airbus UTM is de-risking concepts of operations, prototyping solutions, and building digital tools to ensure that our future airspace is safe, efficient and fair as we integrate autonomous and digital operations.

By combining real-world data from drone and crewed aircraft operations, with the data sets and lessons learned from testing advanced services in USim, our simulation environment, Airbus is in a unique position to build out a sustainable UTM ecosystem - one that will work not just for today or tomorrow, but for decades to come.

Navigating the Future Skies through Advanced Simulation and Collaboration

As part of the Airbus organization, it is in our DNA to ensure that the UTM system we develop and deploy is designed to serve a broad spectrum of stakeholders for both today's airspace, and the increasingly complex and crowded airspace of tomorrow. Solving problems in an airspace that doesn’t yet exist is challenging - but simulating those conditions in a virtual environment is one way to understand and quantify how that future airspace will look and operate.

Airbus UTM’s proprietary simulation environment, USim, was built to explore how future airspace will operate. USim not only allows researchers to explore the unknown, but recent advances have made the technology a useful tool for the aerospace industry to understand and develop a safe and sustainable framework for our future skies. Airbus UTM’s USim provides a digital twin of each element in the UTM ecosystem. This digital twin technology allows UTM stakeholders to test individual services and verify interoperability between existing ones – all without the real-world consequences of system failures.

With advances in machine learning, researchers can also explore the properties of a trade space with greater efficiency. When stress testing a system, for example, machine learning facilitates identifying and exploring failure scenarios in simulation that would otherwise be difficult for researchers to anticipate.

Airbus UTM is fortunate to work with leading research institutions and government agencies to help build our future digital sky.

Streamlining Drone Operations with Advanced Flight Briefing and Authorization Services

Airbus UTM provides a flight briefing service and flight authorization services through Low Altitude Authorization & Notification Capability (LAANC). Airbus flight briefing service provides up to the minute airspace intelligence in the US and AU, helping pilots make decisions about when and where to fly in order to maximize efficiency and comply with airspace regulations. As pilots draw proposed flight plans, The flight briefing capability provides information on safety and regulations that update as the flight plan is adjusted. Airbus UTM’s Flight Authorization tool digitizes the time-consuming paper application process that allows drone operators to receive official airspace authorizations within minutes This service is available for the US only.. Pilots with compliant flight plans approved for flight receive authorization in near real-time. Airbus UTM also offers maps and tile services for UAS airspace awareness and a weather service for more fine-grained flight briefings against historical, current and forecast weather conditions.
