A Path Forward for Airspace & Traffic Management

The aerospace industry is moving incredibly quickly with innovations in aircraft types, sizes, and flight capabilities. The introduction of these new vehicles is no longer a question of if, but when - and in order to support this growth, a more modernized and scalable approach to air traffic management is needed.

Airbus and Boeing have a longstanding role at the heart of driving progress in international aviation. With our underlying commitment to safety, we share a common vision: a future airspace where new and existing users safely operate within a single airspace system – a system that enables the secure and efficient delivery of new aviation services to the entire community, while ensuring the long term sustainable growth in the air transportation sector.

Airbus and Boeing have jointly released, “A New Digital Era of Aviation: The Path Forward for Airspace and Traffic Management.”

In this paper, we demonstrate how UTM can safely and efficiently advance future airspace and traffic management. UTM will offer digital and automated services which can pave the way for future services and new concepts of operation, while working alongside and converging with current ATM advancements.

UTM in Europe is referred to as U-space. Airbus is working closely with the European Commission, EASA, EUROCONTROL and SESAR to help make U-space, and integrated ATM, a reality. In parallel we are also working with the FAA and NASA.

The time to act is now

If we embrace the latest technological innovations and deepen collaboration across regulators, manufacturers, service providers, and consumers - UTM can bring significant benefits to the global community, and serve as a much-needed catalyst for broader airspace and ATM modernization that will enable new industry growth and opportunity.

We hope this paper is a significant step in this direction - and we look forward to working with you to realize the full potential benefits from this era of aviation innovation.
